Drug Uses:Asacol affects a substance in the body that causes inflammation, tissue damage, and diarrhea.
Asacol is used to treat ulcerative colitis, proctitis, and proctosigmoiditis. Asacol is also used to prevent the symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring. Asacol may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
How to Use Asacol
:Swallow tablets whole. Do not crush or chew them. It is important for the outer coating of the tablet to remain intact for the medication to reach the lower intestines. Take this medication exactly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose or take this more often than directed. It may take up to 3 weeks for the effects of this medication to be noticed. If your symptoms do not improve or become worse while taking this medication, contact your doctor.

Precautions:Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, liver problems, asthma, abnormal emptying of stomach contents into the intestine (pyloric stenosis), pancreas problems (pancreatitis), inflammation of the sac around the heart (pericarditis). This drug may make you dizzy; use caution while engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages.
