Highlights

Different definition / meanings for the word "generic drug":
A medicine with the same active ingredient, but not necessarily the same inactive ingredients, as a brand-name drug. A generic drug may be marketed only after the original drug's patent has expired.

Different definition / meanings for the word "adverse drug reaction":
An undesirable response associated with use of a drug that either compromises therapeutic efficacy, enhances toxicity, or both.

What are the differences between brand-name drugs and generic drugs?
You probably know that pharmaceutical companies carry out extensive research and clinical testing to win approval from the Food and Drug Administration for new drugs. The new drug is then protected by patent for at least 10 years. Hence, a brand-name drug. When the patent expires another drug company can "copy the recipe" for brand drug. This "copy" is called a generic drug. The FDA requires that generic drugs have the same active chemical composition, be dispensed in the same dosage form such as a tablet or capsule and be taken in the same dosage as the brand-name drug.

Imitrex
This medication is used to treat migraine headache attacks once they occur. It is not effective in preventing migraines. This medication is not to be used for other types of headaches.

Tamiflu
Oseltamivir is used to treat some types of influenza (flu) in patients who have had symptoms of the flu for 2 days or less. Oseltamivir is in a class of drugs called neuraminidase inhibitors. These drugs work by stopping the growth and spread of the flu virus in your body. Oseltamivir helps shorten the time you have flu symptoms such as nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, muscle aches, tiredness, headache, fever, and chills.

Denavir
Penciclovir is used on the lips and faces of adults to treat cold sores caused by herpes simplex virus. Penciclovir does not cure herpes infections but decreases pain and itching if applied when the earliest symptoms first appear.
